Handwired Elektrika | "PTP" Point-to-point Turret Board Construction
We've been building the Elektrika pedal for 10 years now, and each year we've tweaked transistors, updated designs, and aimed to make a versatile Tone Bender MK1 style fuzz. Beyond the classic "Attack"(Fuzz) and "Volume" controls, our "Tone", "Gate" and "MK1/Zonk" options have made this pedal a pedal board favorite.
We have aimed to create an interpretation of the TB MK1 that everyone can love. You can dial it in to sound just like a classic MK1 on its best day, or its most sputtering, strangled fuzziness. Or adjust it to sound more like a sophisticated overdrive - it's all possible with the Elektrika.
So the last frontier is to strip the design of the Elektrika back to its roots, build it on turret board, wired point-to-point, eschewing the careful tweaks that smooth out the rough edges. Use vintage carbon composite resistors, new old stock capacitors, and (well, as always) carefully selected germanium transistors.
Instead of a smooth ride on a river boat of fuzz, this version of the Elektrika sends you over Niagra Falls in a barrel. You'll feel the cold water spraying in between the slats of the barrel as the roaring gets louder... holler with glee as the adrenaline flows and the dopamine rush of impact floods your senses. Do I exaggerate? You decide.
This baby also responds incredibly well to backing off the volume on your guitar. Whereas the vintage MK1 would just "fizzle out", you can open up the "Gate" control and let even lower gain tones through. Naturally, we audition all transistors for a low noise floor to make this possible!
We're currently building these with a variety of vintage transistors, We also offer our own "cuvee". If transistor model names are not a make-or-break aspect for you, this is a great choice. Our goal in selecting the "cuvee" transistor set is to allow for a full spectrum from warm and mellow to rip-snortin' wild. Select from
Select from a set of AC125 for a more “moderate gain” version .
2N1309 for a high gain monster that is also astoundingly low noise.
A trio of black glass OC43, OC44, and OC45 transistors for the full vintage Monty - that midrange-prominent vintage tone that sounds like it’s coming right off your favorite old record.
Or write to us and ask what we’ve currently managed to get our solder-burned fingers on… I’m always hunting for awesome old transistors, and don’t always update the site to reflect what’s coming in!
