JDM Hornet / Classic "308 Distortion" Style Of The RAT
The stompable little rat of a pedal - known for thick, full range distortion with surprising cleanup and stacking-friendly response. Use the diode clipping selection for 3 levels of headroom - Extreme Germanium clipping, classic silicon diode clipping, or a high headroom, asymmetrical FET clipping.
This circuit is known for amazing “cleanish” tones at low gain (John Scofield’s tone) or deep, heavy “chunk” distortion when cranked (80’s Anthrax distortion!). Three flavors of clipping and a modified filter control make this pedal simple and flexible at the same time.
The filter is also tuned to have a different curve than the original RAT, we tuned this gentler roll-off of sometimes harsh high-mid frequencies to not cut as quickly, making it more useful. The circuit also “tightens up” the bass frequencies, adding clarity without thinning the sound.
Note - we have created a UV-printed 1590B enclosure, with side jacks as the “standard” - if you prefer top jacks, we can house the circuit in a “Tall 1590B” enclosure. These are a custom size, and we have to hand-label them here. I’ve been making them in a gold hammerite finish. This also looks cool with the Hornet image. I’ll post pics ASAP.
